Alpine scullcap "Arcobaleno" - Scutellaria alpina.
Groundcover perennial from the Lamiaceae family.
Origin: grows naturally in the mountains of Southern Europe, the Balkans and southern Siberia. In culture since the 17th century.
Special characteristics: a wide variety of colours, interesting inflorescences reminiscent of a medieval monk’s hat.
Looks great in pots, on alpine slides and in borders with other wild species.
Flower colour: a mix of blue-violet, light blue, white, pink and light yellow colours.
Height of flowering plants: 25 cm.
Foliage: Leaves are 1.5 to 3 cm long, mostly ovate. The leaves are opposite, heart-shaped, pubescent.
Natural flowering period: May - August. Fruits in August.
Winter hardiness zones: Z5 – Z8.
Soil: unpretentious, not demanding on soil but grows better on light and nutritious soils containing lime. The area for skullcaps is prepared in the fall by adding compost (or humus) and wood ash. If the soil is acidic, bone or dolomite meal is added in the same autumn.
Care: fertilizing is carried out in the spring at the beginning of growth and during budding with complex mineral or organic fertilizer. After flowering, feed with soluble forms of potassium and phosphate. Plants overwinter without shelter, but in some years they may fall out. The chances of a successful winter for alpine skullcap decrease with age. This species is best pruned in the spring.
